A Collector’s Guide. Raymond Notley
Miller’s Guide. Octopus Publishing Group 2000
This little book is particularly good because, unlike most books, the standard of photography is very high and so we can get a clear view of the design and colour of the glass pieces.
The author has arranged the glass by the types of object produced rather than going through the pressed glass manufacturers one by one, and this takes a little getting used to. However it gives us the idea of what was being produced for a particular group of objects.
Chapters include:
- Early Pressed Glass
- Plates & Serving Dishes
- Celeries & Pickles
- Butter, cream & sugar wares
- Breakfast & tea wares
- Pitchers & decanters
- Tumblers & Goblets
- Fancy bowls & baskets
- Mugs & cups
- Vases
- LIghting
- For the dressing table
- Slag glass
- Opalescent glass
- Carnival glass
- Decorated wares
- Swans
- Other animals
It finishes with a chapter on fakes and reproductions and then a couple of pages of very clear trademarks as a reference.
The book shows the extremely large variety of objects which were produced by the pressed glass manufacturers in England and the USA, with some Fenton pieces and a chapter on carnival glass which is very popular.
There are guide prices given for the illustrated objects which is helpful although I’m not sure whether the prices have gone up or down since, I’m thinking down.
